Remember the poster competition?
Well, I entered Love Is Awesome poster into the competition, along with the following blurb, and won £50. Thanks everyone for your feedback and thoughts on what makes a really great poster; the prize-money will go to printing the Cards that I am making for Love Is Awesome.
This poster was designed to visually reflect the themes surrounding an exhibition I am working on as part of my PhD. The show is called Love is Awesome, which is an intentionally ambivalent title meaning either that Love is awesome as in Love is powerful enough to inspire awe, or that Love is awesome as in Love is amazing. I wanted the image in the poster to reflect this complexity of meaning by being simultaneously sweet and celebratory (jam on toast) and suggestive of awesome emotional force, or passion of feelings (intense, high-contrast colours, suggestion of violence etc.)
Opening on Valentine’s Day, Love is awesome is a retort to the ubiquitous, bland, gift card culture surrounding that date. An other-worldly quality pervades the fuzzy bears, pink hearts and pretty roses traditionally sent on 14th February and the exhibition, Love is Awesome, intends to counter this other-worldliness with more complex and more reality-based accounts of what Love is.
I therefore have tried with this poster to visually connect the idea of Valentine ’s Day with quotidian experiences and imagery. The typefaces used in the poster are meant to evoke newspaper headlines rather than Valentine’s Day gift-cards, and they suggest a sense of factual reportage rather than euphemistic celebration. The toast is familiar and everyday, but the associative link to Valentine’s day is maintained through a red and white colour-scheme and by the inclusion of a heart motif.
