Caroline is wonderful and I am super glad for her presence on the planet today in particular. Caroline is a great improv-knitter and has made such wondrous items as the knitted vegetable bunting including a knitted turnip:

…and the anatomically correct knitted heart:

You can see in this photograph where Caro is holding the heart, that she is also, like me, a fan of the polka dot. And were the heart not in the way, you would see her felted pea necklace which is the twin to mine. We made them together a couple of years ago at a very sad time. The peas cheered us up. In my garden I have things growing that Caro sent me the seeds for… notably some large orange pumpkin plants, Dill, Calendula and something I don’t know about yet called ‘shoo-fly.’ We talk every week or so, for a couple of hours. About polka dots, about love, about our gardens, our relationships, our health, our work and our dreams. I would be lost without Caroline. I wanted to find something for her which would note the generosity – and silliness – of our friendship.

I therefore devised a knitted ‘inspiration sandwich’ for an inspiring friend, and set about knitting it for the lovely Caroline. Joyfully, I was on the telephone to her this morning when the postman delivered it to her, and so heard it being recieved with the same delight that had accompanied its creation.

Observe the wholesome, donegal tweed 100% wool crusts. These are designed to give inspiration a solid bedrock of nourishing confidence.

Inspiration always benefits from an influx of fresh ideas and we see these typified in the curly edged lettuce and nice green cucumber slices, incorporated into the sandwich here:

Of course, for inspired ideas to really take off, a period of fermentation and maturation needs to occur; ideas muct be left for a time to attain their full potential, illustrated here in this nice slice of slightly felted cheese. You can see it underneath the lettuce…

To bring things to their proper level of wondrousness, you need a little va-va-voom. This is why the knitted tomato slice has been included; for an extra something.

All together now, the Inspiration Sandwich.

Happy Birthday Caro, you’re my inspiration sandwich and I love you!

xxx

Today is my friend Caroline’s birthday.
