I am sure Mark will write in more detail about the route <a href=\"http:\/\/walk2012.co.uk\/blog\/\">on his blog<\/a>, but in the meantime I thought I&#8217;d share with you a selection of creatures (real, imaginery and metaphorical) that we spotted this weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2728\/4321979603_3d6be32094.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Horses &#8211; or evidence of horses; spotted near Putney Bridge, by Beverley Brook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4006\/4322713778_7c53469d26.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Laughing\/Green woodpecker &#8211; this is my favourite bird as I absolutely love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garden-birds.co.uk\/birds\/sounds\/green_woodpecker.mp3\">its giggly sound<\/a>. Please forgive the detestably pixelated qualities of the digital zoom and the failure of the photograph to convey the woodpecker&#8217;s lovely, undulating flight path; it was very magical to see this bird on Richmond Common&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4059\/4321981227_e36036aa95.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;where we also saw these fine Red Deer.<\/p>\n<p>Much later on in the proceedings, Mark found a Feasel with its very own road-sign&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4035\/4322715726_cd49604b85.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and then we slept in a Holiday Inn, which was situated at the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.co.uk\/maps?hl=en&amp;source=hp&amp;q=Felix+Lane+Shepperton&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Felix+Ln,+Shepperton,+Middlesex+TW17&amp;gl=uk&amp;ei=KwdnS8PkBtq5jAezyMGjBw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=geocode_result&amp;ct=title&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CAgQ8gEwAA\">Felix Lane<\/a> in Shepperton.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, striding out into the fresh sunshine and readying ourselves for a 16 mile or so tramp along the Thames and then the River Wey, we found a stern-looking Swan&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4031\/4321983477_baf08ac21c_b.jpg?resize=411%2C548\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and some sort of Goose-Yoga convention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2793\/4321984267_592ec5bf58.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beside the start of the Wey Navigations, I found a Bear with a map.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2753\/4322718504_ea19e69d55_b.jpg?resize=411%2C547\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is rumoured that a monkey accompanied us on our travels also&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2699\/4322719206_176f6cf814_b.jpg?resize=411%2C546\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"546\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and we were greeted at lunchtime by a very friendly Badger, whose regal visage always occurs in the same place as good, Hall &amp; Woodhouse Ales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2757\/4322719904_2ccfc3a815_b.jpg?resize=411%2C546\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"546\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joy of all joys, we spotted an enterprising Barn Owl out hunting early in the afternoon as we neared Guildford; Mark got a better picture of it than I did but you can just about make it out in this shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2694\/4322720702_d81a47c742.jpg?resize=411%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we got home I found <a href=\"http:\/\/needled.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/31\/foxy\/\">a lovely fox<\/a> on Kate&#8217;s blog, and went in search of <a href=\"http:\/\/thomasinaknits.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/magical.html\">Liz&#8217;s post about the Barn Owl<\/a> that I remembered. The title of Liz&#8217;s blog post is &#8216;Magical&#8217; and that&#8217;s how it feels to see the real creatures we saw.<\/p>\n<p>In my mind, even made-up-animals like <a href=\"http:\/\/thedomesticsoundscape.com\/wordpress\/?p=887\">feasels and bears<\/a> become magical totems when you go on a journey; they make for good story-telling when you&#8217;re cold or your feet hurt, and they are a good reminder of all the living things that share the places where we go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend Mark and I set off to explore another 30-mile section of the Walk 2012 project, this time exploring various trails between Putney Bridge and Guildford.
