Birthdays, Birds, Kites and Radiowaves…

It’s been a good day of editing. Another version of the first podcast, this time with better linking sections and more music. I have loads of material for numbers 2 and 3; just need the time now to organise it all!!

On the way to the Prince concert on Friday me and Mark saw this:

It’s the best radio ever but won’t pass safety tests so needs to be gutted and used as a house for a modern CD player if I’m going to use it for the show. I met someone who did exactly this in a group show, O Dreamland, that was on at the weekend in Romney and Hythe. He had a great radioshow playing through his, called Radio Sunshine or something similar. At the same show I met The Caravan Gallery, which was brilliant. The Caravan Gallery basically go around taking photos of disregarded, untidy, notorious and bizarre corners of the world. They then compile these into photos on postcards, which offer a subversive view of the places where they’ve been. In my mind it is about celebrating or drawing attention to our everyday surroundings, but Mark maybe felt it is a bit mocking, as a portrayal of English people and our lives… like why always photograph the bins?!

After buying a million postcards from The Caravan Gallery to feed my new Postcrossing habit we went onto the beach and spent loads of time flying Mark’s kite.

It’s so great once the wind gets under the kite and you get to really guide it through the air. It’s surprisingly physical and my neck hurt afterwards from leaning backwards and up! But it seemed to add to the airy theme of birds and flying that went with my birthday package to Mark. Here is the felt before and after roughing up, soap and sewing machine embroidery.
