Monza was beautiful and it was magical to get a weekend away, courtesy of Mark’s job. My favourite time was spent traveling to lake Como and wandering around the city, where I found some beautiful advent calendar images for readers of this blog:

After wandering around for a bit we ate Polenta in a little restaurant; I had mine with a celery, tomato and pork stew and Mark had his with Porcini mushrooms. The
Polenta was served almost like mashed potato in a pleasing mountain of starchy goodness. This was very sustaining for walking in the cold air . After this, we ascended the mountains by lake Como, via a Funicular railway and walked around in the snow. The views over the lake were breathtaking.

Before flying back yesterday, we browsed the markets where I was totally amazed to find huge, candied fruits, including cantaloupe melons.
I didn’t even know such things existed and have since
learned that candied fruits are made by steeping fruits in increasingly stronger sugar solutions until the water content of the fruit is replaced by sugar. A basic recipe for candying small things is available
here, but it sounds rather time-consuming and sticky.
I didn’t purchase a glace melon in the end because I couldn’t see what use I’d have for it and I don’t like to eat very sugary things, but I did buy some chestnut flour and myrtle berries and have some post-Italy gnocchi cooking planned.
In other news, a recent knitting project has been completed during the weekend away, but since it is a gift for a friend, I have posted about it on Ravelry rather than here.
